Not With A Bang by Mike Harding, Directed by Colin Bailey, WHVH 25th – 28th April 2012
Not With A Bang by Mike Harding is a wry and amusing look at the nuclear disarmament issue. When their wives first join the Women’s Peace Movement, Nobby, Tommy and Ken, pals in the Territorial Army, treat it as a bit of a joke, calling them the “Mata Haris of Deepdale”. But as the women become more involved – demonstrating outside American air-bases, rallying to support the women of Greenham Common – the men find themselves the laughing stock of their TA battalion. The final straw comes when the women, in an attempt to make their husbands give up the army, go on sexual strike applying a considerable amount of domestic leverage.
Mike Harding’s play is set in Northern England and follows a close knit “working class” family. Although the nuclear threat has reduced considerably since the play was written in 1983 the theme of military involvement is still with us today in many modern conflicts and those with an appreciation of early Greek drama will recognise a similar theme.
Our Charity Night in support of Help For Heroes raised an excellent total of £350. Thanks to all who came to the show and entered the raffles.
